A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico today at 2:05 pm. The earthquake hit Michoacan, Mexico, and has left at least one person dead.
The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said that the victim died after a fence fell in a shopping center in Manzanillo, Colima.
There is now a threat of a tsunami hitting Hawaii. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is monitoring the situation. The biggest threat for Hawaii will be over the next six hours.
“Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter,” according to an official government document.
Today is also the anniversary date of two other huge earthquakes “that hit Mexico City in 1985 and 2017.”
In total, 370 people died in the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 that hit Mexico City in 2017, and more than 6,000 were injured.
The 1985 earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 left 10,000 people dead, 30,000 more injured, and thousands of others became homeless.
Coincidently, only an hour before the earthquake, nine states, including Mexico City, practiced earthquake drills.
Almost 14,000 loudspeakers were planned to play the mock alarm and then people were expected to evacuate or take other safety measures.
“Drills remind us that Mexico is a seismically active country and allow us to practice Civil Protection recommendations with regard to what to do before, during and after an earthquake,” the National Seismological Service said.
Myriam Urzúa, Mexico City’s minister for risk management and civil protection said: “We live in a city where earthquakes occur practically every day so we have to prepare citizens.”
Prayers for Mexico and the families affected by the earthquake. Prayers for Hawaii as well.
