Cloe Fields and Christian Zelada were on a leisurely drive in Glendale, California when their car suddenly veered off a cliff. In an instant, the vehicle was falling 300 feet before crashing upside down into a remote canyon. Against all odds, the couple survived the harrowing ordeal.
The couple had been on a mountain drive near their home when Zelada pulled over to let another car pass. Seconds later, their car spun out on the gravelly road and plunged backward off the cliff along Angeles Forest Highway. In her shock, Fields recalls only seeing “trees, dirt and smoke” as they tumbled through the air before finally landing upside down in Monkey Canyon.
Fields and Zelada were able to get out of their vehicle unharmed. Once out of the wreckage they checked each other for injuries and realized that they were miraculously unscathed. They then attempted to flag down passing cars for help but none stopped until an off-duty firefighter spotted them while driving by nearly two hours later. He called in emergency services who soon arrived at the scene with ropes to pull them up from the canyon floor to safety.
Though Fields and Zelada are still shaken by their experience, they both feel fortunate to have made it out alive with no major injuries or lasting damage done to their health or vehicle. “It’s hard for us to come to terms with what happened,” Fields admits, “but we both know we’re very lucky things weren’t much worse.” The couple is grateful for all of those that helped make it possible for them to escape this terrifying incident unscathed – from passersby who didn’t stop but may have alerted authorities about what had happened, to first responders who came quickly with specialized equipment allowing them safe passage back up the cliffside.
