On Monday night, Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told reporters that the discovery of classified documents taken from the White House six years ago by President Joe Biden’s lawyers was proof of a two-tier system of justice. Just two days prior, Fox News had confirmed that a batch of records from Biden’s time as Vice President was found at the Penn Biden Center on Nov. 2 by his attorneys. This raises serious questions about how these documents were handled and why they were not discovered sooner.
The implications for the White House are far-reaching, given that these documents contain classified information and their discovery was not reported for weeks after they were found. According to Richard Saubel, special counsel to the White House, the documents were found in a locked closet while preparing to vacate office space at the center. What is particularly concerning is that, according to Comer, “this is a two-tier system of justice in this country where one set of rules applies against everyday Americans and another set applies against political elites like Joe Biden.”
Republicans have been quick to express their outrage over this situation. The Republican National Committee (RNC) released a statement Monday night accusing the White House and Biden’s lawyers of engaging in “a coverup” by trying to keep this discovery under wraps for so long. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in her statement: “It’s no wonder Democrats didn’t want anyone to know about this scandalous discovery — but now that it’s out there it must be investigated thoroughly and immediately.” The Trump administration has also called for an investigation into the matter. It will be up to Congress and other relevant authorities to investigate further into how these documents were handled so that we can get some answers and ensure proper protocol going forward.
