Federal authorities arrested former ABC News journalist James Gordon Meek Tuesday night on charges related to possession of child pornography. Meek could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of this monstrous crime.
Dropbox filed a tip with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children claiming that a user had uploaded videos containing child pornography. The account was traced back to Meek’s home in Arlington, Virginia.
The Justice Department says that Meek’s devices contained disturbing images depicting sexually explicit conduct involving children. They also found multiple chat conversations between Meek and other users discussing enthusiasm for the sexual abuse of children.
Meek allegedly used social media platforms to manipulate minors into sending him sexually explicit images of themselves as well. Authorities also discovered an external hard drive with 58 pictures related to child pornography and his mobile phone had 34 images and videos of child pornography as well.
Before his raid and arrest, Meeks enjoyed a prestigious career as a journalist, particularly when it came to national security stories. He produced the Hulu documentary 3212 Un-Redacted which focused on reports about an ISIS ambush that left four Green Berets dead in 2017.
It is reprehensible that someone like this can rise so high in our society only to be exposed as such a criminal predator. We must continue our fight against all forms of sexual exploitation including those who create, possess, or distribute illegal pornographic material featuring minors. We must protect our children from these predators at all costs.
